Preparing for the ice camp: Maritime Radio course
Before the 2016 ice camp
Training has already begun! On Monday, February 8, we started the preparatory courses for the 2016 ice camp. According to the objectives of the campaign plan, the scientific team must receive training in the skills needed to ensure the security of the ice camp campaign.
The Green Edge ice camp team has been trained in maritime radiotelephone communication. The Maritime Radio course teaches emergency radio procedures and everyday operating techniques. Our team learned about the use of marine radios, choice of frequencies, operation, the phonetic alphabet, procedural words and phrases, as well as Digital Selective Calling and the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, (DSC/GMDSS).
All of the scientists took advantage of the many features and capabilities of the Maritime Radio course. This complete course prepared our team for the Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime), demanded to operate a maritime radio, with DSC Endorsement exam.
The Maritime Radio course is one of the Boating Safety and Navigation courses offered by the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons.
