Takuvik team carries out test deployments of gliders

Named after the Inuktitut word for the small surface wake left by a diving marine mammal,  Takuvik’s two gliders Qala1 and Qala2  will perform high resolution measurements of physical and biogeochemical variables in the Marginal Ice Zone of the Arctic.

Scientific work aboard the CCGS Amundsen

The 2016 research cruise on CCGS Amundsen will take place in Baffin Bay near Broughton Island between June 3rd and July 14th. Over the 6 week period, the 40 scientists aboard the Amundsen will sample the atmosphere, sea ice, water column and the ocean floor in order to investigate the mechanisms that initiate and control the phytoplankton bloom occurring in the  marginal ice  zone each spring .

Scientific work aboard the CCGS Amundsen

Working group categories for sampling and research interests: DMS, Organic Matter and Nutrients

This is the chemistry part of the oceanographic misson. Water samples are taken from the rosette. Dissolved and particulate organic and inorganic material are quantified and identified. We focus primarily on Carbon, Nitrogen and Phosphorus, as these elements are the main fuel (together with light) of primary production. They also play a crucial role in bacterial and nutrient cycles
